Adjusted from John Irving’s top rated novel A Widow for One Year, the film is set in the favored sea shore network of East Hampton, New York and accounts one essential summer in the lives of well known kids’ book writer Ted Cole (Jeff Bridges) and his wonderful spouse Marion (Kim Basinger). Their once-incredible marriage has been stressed by disaster. Her subsequent melancholy and his resulting acts of unfaithfulness have kept the couple from going up against a truly necessary change in their relationship. Eddie O’Hare, the youngster Ted contracts to function as his mid year partner, is the couple’s accidental yet willing pawn – and, at last, the impetus in the change of their lives.
